2026ICANN round
📅

The ICANN 2026 round — a once-in-a-decade window

New top-level domains do not appear randomly. They come from application rounds, and the last one was in 2012.

How the round unfolds6 phases

Two dates are contractually fixed; everything after them is ICANN’s published projection.

30 April 2026
Application window OPENS confirmed

Anyone with the money and the operational plan — companies, cities, brands, communities — can apply to run their own top-level domain.

12 August 2026
Application window CLOSES confirmed

The last date to submit. The previous round closed in 2012; ICANN has signalled roughly four years between rounds, so the next opportunity is late this decade.

Late 2026 – 2027
Initial evaluation projected

ICANN checks the string itself (confusing similarity, reserved names, geographic terms) and the applicant (technical capability, financial capacity, background screening).

2027
Objections & contention sets projected

Third parties can formally object. Where several applicants want the same string, they form a contention set resolved by community priority or, most often, auction.

2027 – 2028
Contracting & pre-delegation projected

Winning applicants sign the Registry Agreement, pass pre-delegation testing, and are added to the root zone.

2028+
Sunrise → Landrush → General Availability projected

Each new string runs a mandatory 30-day Sunrise for trademark holders, an optional Landrush, then opens to everyone at standard price.

💸What applying actually costsper string

This is the part that filters out almost everyone. None of these are one-off — a TLD is a business, not a purchase.

USD 227,000
ICANN evaluation feeThe base application fee for the 2026 round, payable per string. Non-refundable in large part once evaluation begins.
USD 25k – 500k+
Legal, consulting & application prepApplications run to hundreds of pages of technical and financial detail. Almost every applicant uses specialist counsel.
USD 6k – 50k / yr
Registry back-end operatorYou do not run the DNS yourself — you contract a backend (Identity Digital, CentralNic, Nominet, GoDaddy Registry).
USD 25,000 / yr
ICANN fixed registry feePlus a per-transaction fee once volume passes the threshold. Payable whether or not anyone registers a name.
Six to eight figures
Contention auctionsIf someone else wants your string, the winner is decided by money. Past rounds saw .app go for USD 25M and .shop for USD 41M.
💡
So for an investor the takeaway is not “apply” — it is timing. Expect fresh supply of extensions from 2028 onward, and expect the existing good ones (.ai, .io, .gg, .co) to be bid up in the meantime while new supply is still years from delegation. ICANN’s official round-2 hub ↗

.web — the $135 million extension that took ten years to arrive

No new string in this decade carries more weight. It is finally in the root zone, and nobody outside Verisign knows what it will cost yet.

The story in four numbersdelegated 22 Jul 2026

Every other extension on this page is a niche play. .web is the only one positioned as a general-purpose alternative to .com — and it is owned by the company that runs .com.

USD 135,000,000
Paid at auction in 2016Nu Dot Co won the ICANN contention auction; Verisign — the .com registry — was revealed as the backer. It is still the highest price ever paid for a top-level domain.
10 years
Locked in litigationRival applicant Afilias (later Altanovo) fought the result through ICANN accountability mechanisms and the courts, which is why a string bought in 2016 only reached the root in 2026.
22 July 2026
Delegated to the root zoneThe technical milestone: .web now resolves. Verisign says it will begin offering names through channel partners "later this year".
Not announced
Sunrise, Landrush & GA datesVerisign has published no phase calendar and no pricing. Expect a mandatory 30-day Sunrise for trademark holders before anyone else can register.
⚠️
What to actually do about it. Do not pre-order from anyone quoting a price — none exists yet. Decide now which two or three keywords you would want in .web, watch for Verisign’s phase announcement, and understand that its owner also runs .com and has no commercial reason to price .web cheaply enough to cannibalise it. Blockchain & alt-root domains — read this first

.eth, .crypto, .nft and friends are not ICANN top-level domains. They are names in a private or blockchain-based naming system, and that difference is the whole story.

Four things buyers get wrong

🚫
They do not resolve in a normal browser.

Type a .eth name into Chrome or Safari with no extension installed and you get a search result, not a website. Brave and Opera have partial native support; everyone else needs a plugin or a gateway like name.eth.limo.

✉️
No email, no SSL, no SEO.

You cannot receive mail at one, Google does not index them, and no certificate authority will issue a cert for a string that is not in the ICANN root.

⚠️
Nothing stops a collision.

Two different alt-roots can both sell “.coin”, and if ICANN ever delegates the same string in a future round, the ICANN version wins on the public internet. Unstoppable’s own terms do not promise otherwise.

Where they genuinely do work.

As a human-readable wallet address, and as an identity inside a crypto app. That is a real use case with a real market — it is simply a different market from domain names, and it should be priced as a crypto asset, not as a domain.

.ethPartial browser support
The largest by far. Resolves an Ethereum wallet address and can host IPFS content. Genuinely useful inside crypto; a real secondary market exists on OpenSea.System: ENS (Ethereum Name Service)
.crypto / .nft / .wallet / .x / .daoPartial browser support
Sold as one-time purchase with no renewal. Works in Brave, Opera and via the Unstoppable extension. Trademark policing is thin.System: Unstoppable Domains
.bitDoes not resolve
The original blockchain naming system. Effectively dormant — a cautionary tale about liquidity in alt-roots.System: Namecoin (2011)
.solPartial browser support
Wallet-address naming on Solana. Utility is inside the Solana ecosystem, not the web.System: Solana Name Service
.zilDoes not resolve
Deprecated by Unstoppable in 2022 after a chain migration — holders were migrated or refunded.System: Zilliqa (via Unstoppable)
.coinDoes not resolve
Multiple incompatible roots have claimed .coin. A textbook collision risk.System: Emercoin / others
⚠️
Our appraisal tool deliberately does not price alt-root names — there is no comparable-sales data that maps to the domain market, and any number we produced would be a guess dressed up as an estimate.
🏪

Where to register — and what each one is good at

No two registrars carry the same catalogue, and renewal prices differ far more than first-year prices. These are the ones domainers actually use.

💡
Always check the renewal price, not the promo. A $1 first year on a $60/yr renewal is a trap if you plan to hold the name for years — which, as an investor, you do.
🧭

How investors should think about new extensions

Four rules that decide whether a new-extension bet pays for its own renewals.

1The extension must fit the word.

Hero.Poker and Russia.Health work because the TLD completes the phrase. The same names on a random extension are worth a fraction of that.

2Liquidity follows adoption, not novelty.

.ai and .io resell because real companies use them. A brand-new extension has no resale market until businesses actually build on it — that can take years, or never.

3Renewal cost is your carrying cost.

A $70/yr extension needs to sell for far more, far sooner, than a $10 .com to be worth holding. Multiply by your expected years to sale before you buy.

4.com still anchors the market.

New extensions are opportunities, not replacements. Our free appraisal prices every extension against real comparable sales so you can see the gap before you buy.
